Direct monetization: earning revenue from others
- Data licensing: granting another organisation the right to use a dataset under contract.
- Data products: packaging insights, benchmarks or indices derived from your data and selling access.
- Data feeds: supplying regularly updated data via file delivery or an API on subscription.
- Data partnerships: combining data with a partner to create something neither could alone, with shared revenue.
Indirect monetization: using data internally
Many companies get value from their data without selling it: better forecasting, pricing, fraud detection or customer retention. Indirect use carries fewer external risks and is often a sensible first step. Direct monetization becomes interesting when the data is valuable to others in ways the company itself cannot exploit.
Who buys business data
- Market-intelligence and analytics firms building benchmarks and reports
- Investment and financial firms studying sector trends
- Academic and commercial researchers
- AI developers needing domain-specific training and evaluation data
- Companies in adjacent markets seeking operational insight
Risks to weigh before you start
- Legal: breaching data protection law or contractual restrictions on use.
- Competitive: revealing information that helps competitors understand your business.
- Reputational: customers or partners objecting to their data being used commercially.
- Operational: the cost of preparing, documenting and delivering data reliably.
- Dependency: building revenue expectations on one buyer or one use case.
Most of these risks can be reduced through aggregation, contractual use restrictions, excluding sensitive fields and choosing buyers carefully.
Signs your company is a good candidate
- Several years of consistent operational records
- Data generated as a by-product of a specialist activity
- Clear ownership of the data and its collection terms
- Little or no personal data, or data that can be properly aggregated
